For lots of Detroit’s young people, there’s a dream revolving around basketball, a dream that can provide a way toward better opportunities, personal development and community pride. The 313 Breakaway Championship is not just another series designed to rack up points; it is about building pathways to opportunity. WFYI’s summer camp team had a blast at the tournament and saw how the tournament allows young athletes to demonstrate their skill, put in the time with passionate coaches, and be part of a community that believes in them.

But the advantages go far beyond the court. Via this initiative, families are provided not just a game but an opportunity to thrive. Participants (and their families) will benefit from critical support in the form of appliance donations through Whirlpool’s partnership. Whirlpool’s donation gets families new washers and dryers, necessary items that help give families the dignity, care, and support they need to navigate the demands of everyday life. This is not just about competition also; it’s also about making life a bit easier, a bit brighter and a whole lot more hopeful.
